Indie: Punk

Punk is rooted in garage rock and was developed between 1974 and 1976 in the UK, the US, and Australia. Punk embraces a rough-and-ready DIY aesthetic, initially in reaction to the perceived excesses of mainstream '70s rock. That DIY aesthetic is both musical -- using fast, hard-edged guitar, typically short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics -- and a production principle, with many bands making and distributing their own records.
