Space rock refers to '70s progressive and psychedelic bands, mostly British, whose songs included space themes in the lyrics and long instrumental sections with electronic organs, synthesizers, and experimental guitar work. The term was later applied to late '80s British alternative bands that bore some similarities to their predecessors but took a more ambient and pop direction.
