I got interested beyond listening to music into the love for DJying at the age of 15!! With strict restrictions and boundaries from my parents, I was hesitantly handed over to my mentor with three rules!

  1. No drinking alcohol (I don’t drink up to now)
  2. No smoking (I don’t smoke up to now)
  3. Must continue with school (I did the best I could)

After about two years of carrying speakers, folding and arranging cables plus dusting off vinyl records (as others played), I was allowed to touch and play on a professional turn table!! My mentor (DJ Hanny B .a.k.a Mzei Hannington Mukwaya of SM Sounds) allowed me to pick out over 40 records, create a set out of those records and play it to him over and over /and over /and over for about a year!! I always put these records on the side and knew them like the back of my hand! The aim was for me to learn ear beat matching, breaks, patterns, snares, bars and getting me accustomed to the comfort zone of then picking up other records later! Some days he would award me 2 out of 10 as my score, other days he would say….Go Back to lifting speakers and on a good day, he would simply smile and softly say “Mutabani, lero ogezezako!” (Son, today, you tried) He never awarded me 8/10 at any given time. The best he did was 6/10, but he later told me, that was to introduce and usher humility and humbleness and important virtues into my craft!!

I still talk to my mentor up to now for advice and guidance and owe him my humble craft into the music collection and DJ Journey. I greatly appreciate him. Thank you Mzei / kojja Mukwaya (DJ Hanny B). This set is yours!
