Sounds of DJ Jangbu

Semi-retired local DJ with a mouth bigger than his reputation   ))   Edmonton, AB, Canada

Hi I'm DJ Jangbu. Welcome to my page.

Originally from Montreal QC, I was active in the electronic music scene between 2001 and 2017. I was most active performing, promoting and organizing events in Vancouver BC between 2011 and 2017. I racked up well over 200 gigs over those years, most of them to play full-on psytrance, the genre that the name "Jangbu" was adopted to perform beginning in 2011. With all due respect to cultures of the Himalayas, I chose Jangbu because it is a Tibetan last name which means "The Wise One". My lack of awareness for cultural apporpriation was only matched by my lack of humility, at the time.

Around 2014, I revived my former progressive house stage name, Norman Wells (this one wasn;t appropriate, I had no idea there is a town called Norman Wells in the Nortwest Territories at the time of choosing), and began performing techno-focussed sets under that moniker. Eventually, Norman Wells' sound evolved towards psychedelic techno, progressive techno, and dark minimal techno, all with an emphasis on the squelchier, psychedelic-est range of those genres. Realizing the 2 monikers were creating confusing, I ultimaterly decided to kill of Norman Well and play all the genres which I perform under the single and unique moniker of Jangbu, the one of the two name smost people recognized.

I am based in Edmonton, Alberta since 2017. I'm not going to be name-dropping recognizable names I've opened for, I'm not trying to schmooze promoters to get gigs, or to impress anyone else beyond the quality oif the music I present. Whether I was active int he nightlife or not at any point during my life, I was always at the very least a resident at a very exclusive Club with a capacity of 2 (me and my cat, and occasionally a friend or two),which I affectionately call Berghome. No line=ups to get in, no 19 years olds high off their tits asking for dubstep, no asshole with their phones out on the dancefloor, I'm familiar with the gear... Not the worst gig I've had!

I believe that music is the universal language. No matter where you are from, what your mother tongue is, what creed you follow or what you believe in, if you're here, you understand a good groove. You speak the language of love, community and sharing that is music. Here, there's no fire coming out of the walls. I keep things simple and to the point, and I hope to let the music speak for itself.

Try to listen to my mixes beginning-to-end. My sets tell a carefully crafted story. More than a simple series of songs, they are meant to transport you across imaginary lands.

Thank you to all the producers, record labels, promoters, equipment manufacturers - this page is dedicated to the amazing artists who make my passion possible. If any of them are reading this: THANK YOU

You are appreciated, and you matter. Please enjoy yourself while you are here, and don't hesitate to leave a comment or to get in touch about anything related to electronic music.
