Sounds of DJ Jangbu

Formerly semi-relevant   ))   Edmonton, AB, Canada

Hi I'm DJ Jangbu. Welcome to my page.

Originally from Montreal QC, I was active in the electronic music scene between 2001 and 2017. I was most active performing, promoting and organizing events in Vancouver BC between 2011 and 2017. I racked up well over 200 gigs over those years, most of them under the name "Jangbu" which was adopted when I began to perform full-on psytrance sets in 2011.

I chose Jangbu because it is a Tibetan and Nepali last name which means "The Wise One". My lack of awareness for cultural apporpriation was only matched by my lack of humility, at the time.

I offer my unyielding respect to the Nepalese and Tibetan peoples who, without their consent or knowing, have generously granted me the use of this name. नमस्कार

Around 2014, I revived my former progressive house stage name, Norman Wells (this one wasn't appropriated, I had no idea there is a town called Norman Wells in the Nortwest Territories at the time of choosing, and well, it was so-named by European settlers ), and began performing techno-focused sets under that moniker. Eventually, Norman Wells' sound evolved towards psychedelic techno, progressive techno, and dark minimal techno, all with an emphasis on the squelchier, psychedelic-est range of those genres. Realizing the 2 monikers were creating confusion, I ultimaterly decided to kill off Norman Wells for the second and final time, and play all the genres I perform under the single and unique moniker of DJ Jangbu, the one of the two names most people recognized.

I am based in Edmonton, Alberta since 2017. I'm not going to be name-dropping recognizable names I've opened for, I'm not trying to schmooze promoters to get gigs, or to impress anyone else beyond the quality of the music I present and the way I mix it. Whether I was active in the nightlife or not at any point during my life, I was always at the very least a resident at a very exclusive club with a capacity of 2 (me and my cat, and occasionally a friend or two), which I affectionately call Berghome. No line-ups to get in, no power tripping security, no $6 a water bottle, taps only give hot water scams (in fact, this club has an ice machine!), no assholes with their phones out on the dancefloor... Not the worst gig I've had!

I believe that music is the universal language. No matter where you are from, what your mother tongue is, what creed you follow or what you believe in, if you're here, you understand a good groove. You speak the language of love, fraternity, passion and going beyond materialism in our connections with other human beings: music. Here, there's no fire coming out of the walls. I keep things simple and to the point, and I hope to let the music speak for itself.

Try to listen to my mixes beginning-to-end. My sets tell a carefully crafted story. More than a simple series of songs, they are meant to transport you across imaginary lands.

Thank you to all the producers, record labels, promoters, equipment manufacturers - this page is dedicated to the amazing artists who make my passion possible. If any of them are reading this: THANK YOU

You are appreciated, and you matter. Please enjoy yourself while you are here, and don't hesitate to leave a comment or to get in touch about anything related to electronic music.
