Johnny Clegg was a driving force for change and equality in South Africa for over 40 years.

Some of his songs were banned from airplay in the early days but his real gift was the togetherness his various musical projects fostered, and the opening up of Zulu mbaqanga and folk music to white audiences at home and abroad. Many hits have followed and some, like Impi and Scatterlings of Africa have an anthemic place in South African hearts.

Condensing a 40 year career into one hour is impossible of course, but this podcast version of Mister Coxy's radio program Out of Africa is a timeline of Johnny Clegg's music. It starts with a 1979 track from the Universal Men album with Juluka, travels through the 80's and highlights Savuka hits from Third World Child, Shadowman and Cruel Crazy Beautiful World albums.

It ends with two tracks from his siolo album, Human.

Johnny Clegg died in 2019, he is still missed but his music lives on.
