Different Colors of Jazz featuring music from Marshall Allen, Sun Ra Arkestra, Silvan Strauss, Cinema Royal, Jakob Bänsch, Butcher Brown, Uhlmann, Johnson & Wilkes and more ...

This episode features jazz in various facets. The spectrum ranges from traditional to avant-garde and from analog to electronic.
The band Butcher Brown impresses with its cross-genre approach, which cleverly combines jazz, house, indie, funk, R&B, soul and more. On their new album “Letters From The Atlantic”, the band impresses with its multi-layered and captivating crossover jazz.
I also find the album “Flukin’” by Silvan Strauss very interesting. The Hamburg drummer combines soul, dub, funk and electronic effects with a jazzy vibe. This is the sound of tomorrow’s jazz, which you can already hear today with Silvan Strauss.
Guitarist Gregory Uhlmann and saxophonist Josh Johnson both have fond memories of the great debut album by the band SML. Now they have joined forces with bassist Sam Wilkes as a trio and recorded another remarkable album. On eleven instrumental songs, the trio explores a jazz-influenced interpretation of electro-acoustic chamber music, which culminates at the end of the album with a wonderful interpretation of the Beatles song “The Fool On The Hill”. Great!
Cinema Royal is a project by Yuval Havkin aka Rejoicer and Nitai Hershkovits, both of whom are also known from the band Apifera. Now they have recorded Cinema Royal’s self-titled debut album together, which presents us with relaxed, piano-influenced cinematic sounds. I think that’s very nice!
The young trumpeter Jakob Bänsch is at the start with his second album “All The Others” and convinces with beautiful, traditional jazz. Some of the new songs could already be heard at his inspiring concert in Tübingen, which he played with his band at Club Voltaire last year.
After the youngest musician in this program, we continue with the oldest musician. Marshall Allen has been a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra since 1958 and has led it since 1995. At the beginning of the year, he released his first solo album under his own name. He began recording the album two days after his 100th birthday on May 25, 2024. The album “New Dawn” differs from his work with the Sun Ra Arkestra, the songs are calmer overall. Allen shows his very own voice here, swinging, bopping and also looking to the future without any signs of stagnation. An absolutely impressive album, the record of the week!
Almost at the same time, a new work by the Sun Ra Arkestra has also been released, with a series of Sun Ra compositions that have never been recorded before. This is also a very good album. By the way, the Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen will be playing at the Alte Feuerwache in Mannheim on May 12, 2025.
Enjoy listening to this episode!
