A Trip Down Memory Lane

A few weeks ago I was asked to edit an Allan Walker song called Faded for a friend competing in a bodybuilding competition (they won gold while performing to my edit, BTW!) The song features some vocals samples with the line "Where Are You Now?"

This reminded me of The Generator's 1999 trance classic "Where Are You Now?" The Moonman remix in particular played a lot at events I attended in my late teens/early twenties. I was reminded of how awesome of a life I've had so far. I've been privileged enough to catch the tail end of the golden era of rave parties. And I do mean proper, bust into an abandoned warehouse, not sure when the party will get busted by the cops, making sure to fully enjoy every second of it, climbing onto the roof to watch the sunset, elated that we even made it to the morning, watching the city wakeup to the muffled sounds of these classics, kind of raves.

The song selection in this mix reflects that time of my life, my late teens and early twenties, when I lived in the electronic music mecca that is Montreal, where I was born and raised. My hope is that it will conjure similar memories for at least some of you old schoolers out there, and perhaps connect some newer electronic music enthusiasts to the golden era of a genre that defined an era in electronic music and which perhaps unbeknownst to many, continues to influence the sound of modern electronic music: epic trance. With a special nod to my favourite local DJs at the time, whose influence, advice and support was seminal in my early years of "spinning", as we called it then: DJ Mad, DJ Peter, Iznogood, Indica. And many, many more...

I've attempted to record the mix a handful of times since, but I have to admit this is not a genre I have any experience DJing, so I am not entirely satisfied with the results so far. I"m also a but critical of the song progression, having noticed that energy levels are not consistent, so I'm currently reworking the tracklist. There were also some songs that were difficult to find in good-enough quality audio which had to be removed. What started as a 34-track epic extended set should end up with about 20. I hope to have it released within the next 48 hours.
