Halloween viene collegata alla festa celtica di Samhain, originariamente scritto Samuin in gaelico, stagionalmente speculare alla notte di Valpurga che ricorre tra il 30 aprile e il 1º maggio. Il nome della festività, mantenuto storicamente dai Gaeli e dai Celti nell'arcipelago britannico, deriva dall'antico irlandese e significa approssimativamente "fine dell'estate".
