El ciberpunk es un subgénero de la ciencia ficción, está mayormente basado en el uso de sintetizadores, pero también hay piezas complementadas por el uso de guitarras eléctricas, saxo y otros instrumentos muy utilizados en los ochenta.

También se caracteriza por su estilo retrofuturista, inspirado por las películas de ciencia ficción futurista de la época, como Blade Runner o Tron, en las que nos presentan mundos plagados de tecnología, luces de neón y hologramas, muy al estilo del cyberpunk.

Musicalmente, se caracteriza de muchos otros géneros musicales como el indie, ambient y chillwave entre otros, synthwave con estilos de décadas, principalmente de finales de los años 70 y los años 80 (como el funk, el New Age). Artísticamente, incorpora elementos tan dispares como el software y diseño web de finales de los años 80, las imágenes pixeladas, la escultura griega clásica, la pintura renacentista, el anime, el uso de la música, el neon, la publicidad de épocas ochentosas, el renderizado 3D y colores vivos, con temáticas de ciencia ficción y ciberpunk de los años 80 y 90s, mientras estéticamente exhibe una curiosa y nostálgica fascinación por los artefactos y la estética retro, las modas y tendencias de décadas pasadas así como publicidad de las mismas.

Se impregna de la estética y la nostalgia de la cultura pop de esos años.
